The full moon began with a cold, rainy day. September had begun and the weather seemed to be trying to make up for the low precipitation rate of August. It was pouring down like buckets as I hurried under the roof of Josh’s house. A car rushed behind me through the puddles on the asphalt, but otherwise everything was quiet. It was the magic of wet weather. It emptied the streets so quickly that I hadn’t seen a single passerby on the way here. I forced myself not to glance at Josh’s blue Toyota while unlocking the door. It was waiting there in the driveway and probably looked as lonely as I felt.

The gray sky symbolized my mood far too well. I knew I wouldn’t run into Josh here—that was impossible. Still, I’d struggled all day long to keep from imagining what that would be like. Josh opening the door because he had escaped. Josh opening the door because it was all just a big misunderstanding. However, whenever I got to the point where we gazed at each other, I couldn’t continue my daydreams. It was no use wallowing in them; they weren’t going to come true. Still, my sadness deepened when I noticed Josh’s crowded mailbox.

No, he definitely wasn’t here anymore.

I entered the apartment and gasped. I had forgotten the chaos in the house. The floor was covered in documents, clothes, and odds and ends that I didn’t even know Josh owned. I saw the drawer of his television cabinet lying on the floor—rummaged through and carelessly thrown away—and even the shards of some dishes on the kitchen floor. It was a sight that made my anger boil. Those men didn’t have a shred of respect for Josh, for his home. They’d left this place like his life didn’t matter.

Like Josh would never return here.

I had to swallow my tears so as not to break down. Then I took off my jacket to hang it on Josh’s coat rack. It was about time to clean this place up.

Collecting Josh’s things made me feel strangely calm. Putting everything back in its place so that he could find it later helped me feel a little better. Every object seemed to be a mantra that assured me that I would see him again. My only hope for that was the werewolf pack from Shatterlake. I had gained a little bit of trust for the three men in the last days, or at least confidence that they were a good team. Liam was the thoughtful one, Keith was the one who wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty, and Hunter had strength for two. And none of them lacked courage. If there was anyone who could get Josh out of his situation, it was definitely these three. I still feared that Keith would decide at the last moment not to put himself in danger for Josh, but I had no one else to ask. I had no choice but to depend on the pack.
